Form:
Definition- An element of art using all three dimensions (height, width, depth); when all pieces of a work of art are used to give it structure and depth. Content: Definition- The subject matter or significance of a work of art. Composition: Definition- The arrangement/placement of the parts of a work of art. Abstraction: Definition- The process of creating art through exaggerated/simplified forms, allowing it to be interpreted in different ways. Space: Definition- The distance/area between, around, above below or within things. (Two-dimension): Definition- Only height and width, no depth Three-dimension: Definition- Height, width, and the appearance of depth. Positive Shape: Definition- Areas in artwork that are filled with something. Negative Shape: Definition- Empty areas of artwork; can create shapes based off the positive spaces. Figure-ground: Definition- The overall unity and relationship of the figures and the background, and how they aid each other in the final artwork. Balance: Definition- The arrangement of the pieces of a work of art to create "stability" and an even flow throughout the piece. Asymmetry: Definition- When one side of the artwork does not match/replicate, the other side. Asymmetrical balance: Definition- Both sides of the composition are different from each other, but the elements are arranged in such a way that it still creates balance. Symmetry: Definition- One side of the composition mirrors the other side. Symmetrical balance: Definition- Both sides of the composition are exactly the same, creating balance between both sides of the artwork. Focal point: Definition- The main attraction of a piece of artwork and is the most interesting. Axis/axis line: Definition- An imaginary straight line that shows movement and the direction of movement. Motif: Definition- A consistent element in a work of art that usually repeats itself, whether it may be a theme or a design/figure in the artwork. Accent: Definition- The variation in line weights in a composition to show contours and outlines, done by pressing harder or softer on the drawing tool. Contour: Definition- The outline/edges of an element in a work of art. Contour lines: Definition- The lines that define the edges of a subject, helping to portray shape and volume. Line: Definition- A mark with length and direction, can be straight, curved, short, short, long, thick, thin, etc. Implied line: Definition- A line that is suggested, but not actually there. Edge: Definition- Where two things come together. Harmony: Definition- a pleasing combination of elements that are compatible with each other and create unity. Rhythm: Definition- Repetition of elements in artwork to give the viewer a sense of movement. Repetition: Definition- Using elements of a work of art more than once to help create unity and harmony in the piece. Unity: Definition- Effectively utilizing all elements of a work of art so that they benefit from each other and create a sense of wholeness. Variety: Definition- Utilizing different elements, shapes, textures hues, and more to create complex relationships in the artwork. |
